Scams in Social Media Comments

Post by CrankyBoomer »

Hope it's okay to put this here. Please feel free to edit/remove if you're a mod and it doesn't sit right with you. I've noticed threads under random YouTube videos where someone says something like (paraphrasing) "I was worried sick but Mr Barney Bigpants has shown me the secret of making money". Then someone else will chime in with "Mr Barney Bigpants proved a saviour to me financially". Another will say "Please give me the contact details for Mr Bigpants". Of course it could be bots but virtual or human scammers, they are very irritating. I've noticed some scammers on a platform called Medium which is like a cross between a writing and a social media platform (though you can go there just to read). On Medium it's things like WhatsApp me or join my Telegram/Discord group.

They've infected social media for years. See them quite a bit on Facebook and the Youtubes. Often you'll find 5 different accounts, all with the same profile pic, writing basically the same comment. A lot of them lead back to a central scammer, often a "forex" trader trying to scam people with Bitcoin or other crypto currencies.
