Isn't barratry defined as causing shipwrecks for profit?
Actually, I believe it is or was in admiralty law, but in civil and criminal practice it's basically vexatious litigation by an attorney.
Wait, I thought "barratry" was an old English term for the French sport, "mettant un ours dans un arbre." This what the Germans call "setzen einen Bären auf einen Baum".

I guess I could be wrong.

EDIT: Or, is it "setzen einen Bären in einen Baum" ?

SECOND EDIT: Multiple choice. Famspear should:

A. Stay away from futile attempts at legal humor.

B. Stay away from futile attempts at foreign language humor.

C. Stay away from any attempts at puns.

D. All of the above.

I'm still think Peter will shut this guy down, he's asking people to donate to someone who is not Peter and we just can't have that.

Looks as though Hendrickson is going for rehearing:

http://losthorizons.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=748 [surprise]

So, dumping Welzel will likely not happen until after denial of rehearing.

He may be looking on Welzel as saving his skin in some inane way.

He may also be trying to understand Welzel's case or at least the probably outcome.

By the way, a similar case was denied at Shane v. United States of America, No. 1:07CV00577-RBW, by the same judge. There's others with names I do not know.

The Sixth Circuit sanctioned Petey for a frivolous appeal, and he is seeking a rehearing? Maybe he is only seeking to reverse the sanctions. And maybe the Circuit will sanction him for a frivolous rehearing petition.

Heh, heh.

I wonder what the market-value of being labeled a vexatious litigant is? Does that add to your 'net cred and rally the faithful or does it scare hesitant people away?

Then again, that assumes they would understand the word.

I believe it's a rehearing because it's forty-five days from the decision.

But you may be right. Apparently, he's also seeking amicus briefs.

Didn't "V" use the word "vexatious"? I'm sure they know what that means then. :)

Bob Welzel has filed a motion for summary judgment in his Tax Court case.

Welzel claims to be campaign chairman for someone named "Bob Bird," who is running for the United States Senate in Alaska, under the banner of the "Alaskan Independence Party."

See:

http://www.losthorizons.com/phpBB/viewt ... c&start=45

The Bob Bird web site does indeed indicate that Bob Welzel is with the campaign.

http://birdforsenate.com/news.html

Based on the web site for the Alaskan Independence Party, it appears that the Party's goal is to have the state be allowed to vote on whether Alaska should (A) become a territory, (B) become a separate and independent nation, (C) assume commonwealth status, or (D) remain a state. According to the web site:
The call for this vote is in furtherance of the dream of the Alaskan Independence Party's founding father, Joe Vogler, which was for Alaskans to achieve independence under a minimal government, fully responsive to the people, promoting a peaceful and lawful means of resolving differences . . .

An independent Alaska might inspire Vladimer Putin to "renegotiate" its status.
