Good thing it's not an Affidavit of Truth, Riley would be in serious trouble.Demosthenes wrote:

As it is, that is a very strange combination of defiance and cooperation. Of course the marshall could be lying, but it is a very different story from Riley's account.

I just can't help but think back to all those posted stories where they thought the USMS was a clueless bunch of morons. Turns out they pretty much knew everything that was going on all along. The USMS is starting to redeem itself a little in my eyes. Next stop, stop the stupid concert from going on tomorrow, by blocking the entrance.

Insist that they read it before going onto the property. Have tow trucks and paddy wagons standing by.

Fed agents call Cohoes raid part of 'militia' tax case

ALBANY - Daniel Riley, the man federal authorities flushed from a Cohoes home on Wednesday, was one of four persons indicted Thursday as associates of a New Hampshire couple who have allegedly held authorities at bay since this spring. The pair were convicted and sentenced in absentia on tax evasion charges.
All of the persons involved in the case were described by federal authorities as part of an anti-government network or "militia." An agent who was one of about 20 involved in Wednesday's raid in Cohoes said the arrests were made almost simultaneously in four states so the suspects could not alert each other through Internet contacts.
Arrested were Riley, 40, of Albany; Cirino "Reno" Gonzalez of Alice, Texas; Jason Gerhard, 22, of Brookhaven; and Robert Wolffe, 50, of Randolph, Vt., the U.S. Marshals Service said Thursday.
All four were taken into custody near their home communities except for Gerhard, who was found in Ft. Leonard Wood, Mo.
Riley was arrested at 62 Younglove Ave. in Cohoes Wednesday afternoon under initially hazy circumstances. Neighbors said on the day of the raid that authorities removed boxes of weapons from the home.
A neighbor said Thursday that Riley's family owns the home, but declined further comment. Another said he knew Riley "pretty well" but added, "I truly can't speak, I told the police officer." Half a dozen others said they did not know Riley.
"I knew him as a kid, he went to school with my daughter at Cohoes Catholic. He seemed like a nice kid," said Sheila Farrigan, adding she had not spoken with Riley in several years.
A federal agent who took part in the Riley raid said the man was arrested, unarmed, in his driveway and made a brief attempt to evade arrest but did not go far before he was collared.
The agent who is assigned to an Albany field office asked that his name be withheld because he fears the group could attempt reprisals.
Though Riley was arrested without incident, the agent said authorities saw weapons in plain view through the home's windows and requested a search warrant that led to the confiscation of a trove of weapons.
"He had an arsenal," the agent said. "Six different firearms were seized, including three AK-47s and one .50-caliber sniper rifle. These were all loaded and placed near the windows of the house, like in case anyone ever came for him."
Also confiscated, according to the agent, were a .308-caliber rifle and a shotgun. Ammunition, including fully-loaded 100-round drum magazines for the AKs, was also confiscated, he said. It's not clear how many rounds of ammunition were in the house "but it's a lot." It was unclear if the weapons were legally acquired according to the agent.
It is not immediately clear whether firearms charges are pending.
Also in the house during the raid were Riley's father and another man linked to "militia" groups, the agent said, but both were later released without charge.
Riley was brought for arraignment before federal Judge Randolph Treece who had signed off on the search warrant earlier in the day.
The U.S. Marshals Service said the four men are charged with crimes, including aiding and abetting Edward and Elaine Brown of Plainfield, to possess and use a firearm in relation to a crime of violence in connection with their roles to attempt to obstruct justice by conspiring to impede the work of federal agents.
Riley was charged with four counts, including the above mentioned crimes, as well as conspiracy to commit offenses against the federal government, the federal agent said, claiming Riley and other supporters actively aided the Browns.
The Associated Press, quoting unsealed federal court documents, reported Thursday the government claims that Riley "publicly declared his intention to forcibly resist any effort by the U.S. Marshals Service to arrest Edward Brown and Elaine Brown" and helped to buttress the couple's New Hampshire home against a raid by authorities.
"Ed Brown has threatened to kill law enforcement officers and other government officials," U.S. Marshal Stephen Monier, who is assigned to the New Hampshire district, said in a statement Thursday, urging the Browns to surrender. Monier could not be reached by phone for further comment.
In recent years, according to numerous accounts, the Browns have refused to acknowledge the legitimacy of the federal government or federal tax law, leading to a court case that charged the couple with evading income tax.
Both, according to these accounts, have holed up in their home and are engaged in a standoff with authorities who seek to arrest them.
According to federal authorities, Riley and the three other men indicted this week paid multiple visits to the Browns' property and brought them supplies in order to extend the standoff.
"They would go up to the place. They would bring them supplies. They would bring them firearms," the agent said of Riley and the three others arrested. Supporters "left their lives to stay with the Browns for weeks or months."
It was during one occasion, in June, that federal agents encountered Riley and briefly detained him after using a Taser to subdue him.
The agent said Riley was released without charge after three hours, but denied the man's claims he was shot at. He said Riley's rap sheet includes charges of marijuana possession and petty larceny but no felony convictions, which allowed him to obtain a valid handgun permit.
Riley, according to a clerk in U.S. District Court's Albany office, appeared in court Wednesday afternoon but apparently did not enter a plea before being turned over to authorities in the district of New Hampshire.
A poster calling himself "Shaun Allen Kranish" on a Web site detailing the Browns' beef, http://www.makethestand.com, wrote Thursday that supporters of the couple should try to get information on Riley's whereabouts from the government.
An item posted on the site last month and credited to Riley takes the form of a conversation with George Washington about the right to bear arms and urges the recruitment of millions of Americans to bear arms against the government.
Another, earlier posting credited to Riley portrays "the international bankers" as the enemies of democracy.
Authorities close to the case say the Browns and their alleged allies are part of an underground network of gun-hoarding quasi-survivalists who abhor federal authority and stay in touch with each other via the Internet.
"These arrests were simultaneously done in four different states, and that was for a reason. They communicate with each other" over the Internet, the Albany agent said.

Elaine Brown also failed to appear for what was to be the fourth day of evidence but, after a brief continuance of the proceedings, she returned for the remainder of the trial. Whereupon she was convicted and then released on bail pending sentencing. Shortly thereafter, however, she was charged with violating conditions of her release pending sentencing by removing an electronic monitoring ankle bracelet and returning to her residence where Ed Brown remained. A federal warrant was issued for her arrest.

Three of the four arrested were charged with one or more counts of conspiracy. Were Ed or Elaine Brown among the alleged conspirators?
If they were (and it's difficult to believe that they were not), is it possible that they have already been indicted on new charges, and that the indictment has been sealed until they have been brought into custody? The idea being that they might surrender facing the sentences already imposed, but might be unwilling to surrender if they knew they could be facing prison terms of two or three times longer because of additional charges.
And is this something I shouldn't be writing publicly?

The Marshals have set up a road block to the Browns. Every car is searched, and every person is handed a sheet of paper giving notice to the recipient of what laws they'll be breaking if they continue on to the house. Those who want to face legal charges are then allowed to proceed up the driveway. You can imagine the effect on Ed.
