Pessimist Porn
An item on ABC News tonight (4/19) caught my attention, an item called "Pessimist Porn for Hard Times" about the attraction that some people have towards predictions that everything is getting much, much worse.
The writer who coined the phrase "pessimism porn," Hugo Lindgren, agreed that reading it allows him to "feel smarter than the rest of us," and provided an "apocalyptic thrill."
That makes me think of tax deniers, who seem to take delight in the idea that there is a revolution coming and that they're the only ones who are seeing it.
And a featured purveyor of "pessimism porn" is some guy named Peter Schiff. Guess who he's the son of?

I always liked the phrase "apocalyptic glee" coined by David Foster Wallace.

The reason why so many are intrigued by such notions, is because the reality of it all means that they will get to take potshots at the heads of all the treasonous traitors, such as yourselves for example. It will be a great day, indeed! A very great day for the advancement in history of our Nation and its posterity.

Re: Pessimist Porn
My guess is that folks like Weston have squandered a great deal of their lives to such an extent that they no longer amount to anything meaningful and that it's far too late for them to achieve any sort of semblance of stability and happiness.
But a total socio-economic collapse...well, that would excuse their failures and let them off the hook just nicely.

Just a W.A.G. Your opinion (and mileage) may vary.

Every time there is an economic downturn, a bunch of the end-of-the-world'ers run off into the boonies: Remember all those nuts back in the late 1980s who started hanging out at militia camps in Arkansas.
But at the end of the day, they will again find themselves lower on the socio-economic totem pole from where they started. Social Darwinism.

Re: Pessimist Porn
and as much as I hate to ruin your fantasy, Weston, the days when a violent uprising of the people are past us....for a number of reasons.
First, cause nutjobs like you as a group lack the organizational skills to assemble an armed group without you all killing yourself when and argument breaks out over the beef jerky
Second, there ain't much, even at the good gun shows, that can compete with the stuff the Army, etc... have. And before you start saying "well the army won't obey the orders etc..." just remember, at least some of them agree with us on this, some are as batshit crazy as you but don't agree with you either and the efective kill ratio based on what each side has is gonna be about 150:1 .... it don't just take guys with guns, Weston, and an organized army will bury you with simple logistics
But go get out your copy of Red Dawn, tissues, and vasoline....and have at it...

To use TP logic, the military organization has a "vested interest in keeping the status quo". I'm no expert in US military organization, but I guess the number of people who make a lifelong career in green increases, the higher up in the organization you get. This includes the guys who control the big red buttons, and all kinds of cool studd. By their own logic, the sov'runs can't trust the system, since they too get their FRNs from the dreaded 'system'.Gregg wrote: Second, there ain't much, even at the good gun shows, that can compete with the stuff the Army, etc... have. We've been over the civil defense thing in our neighborhood. (World War Z prompted this assessment. -- You have to understand my neighbors.) Basically we can hold out against yahoo militia attacks. However, we cannot hold out for two minutes against a professional military force. Not even Mexico's, let alone the Iowa National Guard.

Re: Pessimist Porn
I just love that the word "traitor" gets thrown out by the crazies with reckless abandon. What is our crime? We had a different opinion of the law. Yet, that is treasonous!!! We must die for our great crime against this country! Military and eleemosynary service will be thrown out - the only thing that matters is if you agree with them on the tax code.Weston White wrote:The reason why so many are intrigued by such notions, is because the reality of it all means that they will get to take potshots at the heads of all the treasonous traitors, such as yourselves for example. Ah yes, Ho ho. Hee hee. Hah hah. Weston, you are a barrel of laughs. And you are sooooo smart! Oh, no Weston. We don't consider your threats to be "threats." But of course, you consider your threats to be threats -- otherwise, you wouldn't have brought it up.
And, Weston, in the event that you ever find yourself in a levy situation with the Internal Revenue Service, we won't consider the forcible seizure of your property to be a "forcible seizure of your property."
And if you're ever indicted for federal tax crimes, we won't consider your indictment to be an "indictment."
And if you're ever convicted for federal tax crimes, we won't consider your conviction to be a "conviction."
And if you ever go to federal prison, we won't consider the time you spend in federal prison as "time spent in federal prison."
And of course, we know that if you ever do end up with any of these troubles as a result of your federal tax related activities, 'we know you'll get the joke, and you'll laugh right along with us, Weston.
Ho ho. Hee hee. Hah hah.

Unfortunately, many of these "end-of-the-world", paranoid psychos are in key positions in the military, especially at the Air Force Academy.Joey Smith wrote:Every time there is an economic downturn, a bunch of the end-of-the-world'ers run off into the boonies: Remember all those nuts back in the late 1980s who started hanging out at militia camps in Arkansas.
But at the end of the day, they will again find themselves lower on the socio-economic totem pole from where they started. Social Darwinism.
See: Harper's May 2009 report, "Jesus Killed Mohamed" The Crusade for a Christian Military, by Jeff Sharlet.
Regarding Maj. Gen. Johnny A. Weida, Maj.Gen. Robert Caslen, Lieut.Gen. Robert Van Antwerp, here's what Sharlet has to say...
"What men such as these have fomented is a quiet coup within the armed forces: not of generals encroaching on civilian rule but of religious authority displacing the military's once staunchly secular code. Not a conspiracy, but a cultural transformation, achieved gradually through promotions and prayer meetings, with personal faith replacing protocol according to the best intentions of commanders who conflate God with country. They see themselves not as subversives but as spiritual warriors - "ambassadors for Christ in uniform," according to Officers' Christian Fellowship; "government-paid missionaries," according to Campus Crusades Military Ministry.
According to the group's (OCF) current executive director, retired Air Force Lieut.Gen. Bruce L. Fister the "Global war on terrror" - to which Obama has committed 17,000 new troops in Afghanistan- is "a spiritual battle of the highest magnitude." As jihad has come to connote violence, so spiritual war has moved closer to actual conflict, "continually confronting an implacable, powerful foe who hates us and eagerly seeks to destroy us," declares "The Source of Combat Readiness," an OCF scripture study prepared on the eve of the Iraq war."
Now, pardon me while I check my precious bodily fluids.
