I should add I have no knowledge of the French benefit system, having never needed to claim benefits in France it's an area I am ignorant of. I simply based my understanding off what the Uk's government site said.
However he may not be entitled because of his disability/illness, it may be that the type of benefits he is entitled to are strictly limited to those who work and not for those who are on the sick.
I'd agree that selling the car, which by now should be more expense than it is worth to keep should be a priority and using those funds to get back or even hitch-hiking, plenty of lonely truckers out there.

It's a £69 return, but he'd probably be better served going on a Ferry as a walk on passenger, fares for that can be as low as £1, if you book in advance.
