To put that into context: that's an old article from 2013.

Not surprisingly he didn't fare any better in the appeal then he did at trial.

Hillman's case involves a conviction, under 18 USC § 915 - "falsely assumes or pretends to be a diplomatic, consular or other official of a foreign government", when he had posted a fake license plate to his car that said "Private - Diplomat", and he was convicted under 18 USC § 1017 for putting a replica of the US Dept of State seal on a fake ID card identifying him as accredited to the UN.

Standard sovcit success fail in turning what could have just been a misdemeanor traffic citation into a Federal issue and prison sentence.
