Well, there's proof right there it was all just a disinformation campaign. And unless it made at least the Tattle, we know it isn't real news.

It's obvious. The man has been recruited to infiltrate some fringe group, so they're establishing his cover. Of course this won't be revealed until about the 45 minute mark, after the therapy/rant montage, the fight with the orderlies, the escape from a straight jacket and a locked room, the car chase, and the hilarious conversation with a real psycho in the homeless camp. Of course there will be points in the movie where the main character begins to wonder if he might be legitimately crazy, and the last few seconds show a disturbing scene that implies that some part of the conspiracy claim is true.
