On May 25, 1948, a former United States Army flier entered the American Embassy in Paris, renounced his American citizenship and, as astonished officials looked on, declared himself a citizen of the world.
Note that throughout his long career, he never claimed his methods would bring immunity to taxes or other legal obligations. He just worked for peace.
Also, he claims to have nearly a million "world citizens", which is somewhat more than any of the various Sovrun Republics of more recent vintage.
