Not sure if this guy deserves his own thread but why the hell not.

The only previous mention of Ambort on Quatloos is over The Brown Appellate Case thread where Ambort filed a habeas corpus from inside federal jail trying to get Elaine and Edward Brown out of jail.

You may ask, why was Ambort in jail to begin with? It's all explained in this dismissal of his pro se lawsuit from 2004 where he tried to get his conviction for tax issues overturned:

Ambort conducted tax seminars throughout the United States instructing attendees that, although they were United States residents, they could legally claim to be “nonresident aliens” exempt from most federal income taxes.   He assisted attendees in their filing of amended return forms claiming a refund for past years' taxes.   Ambort received an instructional fee and a share of any refunds.   For these efforts, Ambort was indicted for one count of conspiracy and sixty-nine counts of aiding and assisting in the preparation of false tax returns under 26 U.S.C. § 7206(2).

Defendants were indicted by a grand jury on one count of conspiracy to defraud the United States by assisting in the preparation of false tax returns, in violation of 18 U.S.C. 371, and on seventy counts of aiding and assisting in the filing of false tax returns, in violation of 26 U.S.C. 7206(2). The conspiracy count alleges that Defendants operated an organization known as "Association de Libertas" (ADL) that conducted "constitutional history seminars" throughout the United States. It further alleges that ADL leaders falsely told the seminar attendees that they were "nonresident aliens" exempt from most federal income taxes. For a fee of $1,500 to $1,600 for "forms training," ADL instructors taught the attendees how to complete an amended return form (Form 1040X) and/or a nonresident alien income tax return form (Form 1040NR), falsely claiming a refund for past years' taxes. In addition to the above fee, ADL also required one-third of any refund. To ensure payment, the mailing address of an ADL instructor or "escrow agent" appeared on the amended returns.

ADL participants could also pay $2500 to attend an "instructors" seminar. All payments for seminars were made in cash, money order, or cashier's check. An ADL representative told one of the participants that the cash-only policy was used because cash could not be traced by the government. Graduates of the "instructors" seminars were eligible to enroll new clients in ADL and would receive a portion of the fees the new enrollees paid.

For all these shenanigans, Ambort was sentenced to 9 years in prison and 5 years supervised release.

Now I suspect Ambort's supervised release is over because he's right back in the tax protestor scam business, this thursday he appeared on Angela Stark's show going over the usual tax protestor nonsense but also mentioning that he was involved in the case of William Bailey:

A federal jury today convicted Dr. William Bailey, a local physician of osteopathic medicine, on eight counts of tax evasion. According to evidence presented at trial, between 2004 and 2011 Bailey earned over $1.1 million in compensation for his services as a physician at two different local clinics and paid no taxes. Bailey concealed his income by having his paychecks directed to an account in the name of a trust.

Now the ADL scam must have been particularly lucrative because at one point in the show, Ambort mentions how he tried to withdraw over $100,000 from a joint bank account held by ADL before the IRS could seize it. Ambort also mentioned his 9 years in jail.

Found more destruction in Ambort's wake, not only did Glenn end up in jail but he got his own attorney sentenced to 3 years in jail:

Thomas Wood, a practicing attorney from Cottonwood Heights, was sentenced today to three years in prison and fined $250,000 for corruptly endeavoring to impede the Internal Revenue Service and failing to file federal income tax
returns for two years. Wood, who was convicted by a jury on August 4, 2008, after a week-long trial, was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Dee Benson. Wood also was ordered to pay $56,852 in restitution to the United States Treasury.
According to the indictment and evidence presented at trial, from 1998 through 2002, Wood helped two tax criminals, Glenn Ambort and John Benson, hide millions of dollars in income.

In those years, Ambort and Benson were awaiting trial in a federal prosecution for conspiracy to commit tax fraud. While assisting in their defense, Wood used several bank accounts that he held in trust to hide millions in income that Ambort and Benson were taking from the MyCor Investment Club, a Canadian Ponzi scheme. That scheme was later investigated by the Utah Division of Securities, and for his involvement, Wood pled guilty four years ago in state court to a misdemeanor securities violation

Since that identifies Amborts partner as "John Benson" instead of Bill Benson, I'm going to guess Bill and John are different people but it's an odd coincidence. Maybe related somehow.
