As if my poor city didn't have enough law enforcement issues. Based on the article, he admits not filing, but seems to be contending that he has been paying via withholding. Hard for me to believe that he'd be charged if he was close to fully paid. It's also troubling that the mayor says she supports him.

Re: Baltimore Police Chief Charged with Willful Failure to File
Despite his contention that he was paying via withholding, there's a distinct difference between "failure to file" and "failure to pay."
It's highly likely that there's something else going on which generated the willful failure to file charges.
It's interesting that he's not compliant with his Maryland taxes for the same three years.
And, that he resumed filing after the three-year lapse.

Taxes are the price we pay for a free society and to cover the responsibilities of the evaders

Mayor Catherine Pugh expressed confidence in De Sousa following announcement of the charges.
"He made a mistake in not filing his taxes for the years in question. He is working to resolve this matter and has assured me that he will do so as quickly as possible," she said in a statement.
Pugh said she has "full confidence" in De Sousa and trusts that "he will continue to focus on our number one priority of reducing violence."

He's a law enforcement official facing Federal criminal charges, which he admits to be correct. He should be suspended at the very least. She didn't support his failure to file, she said she had confidence in his abilities as a police chief.

The story continues. . .
Last week, the mayor reversed course and suspended the police chief. This week, it has been revealed that the Federal investigation is ongoing and may broaden. Following this revelation, the chief resigned.
