A West Valley City man who left his trial on tax evasion charges during a break and never came back has been convicted in absentia of four felony counts, according to the Utah State Tax Commission.
Hiram Drane, 44, who was representing himself in the trial, was convicted Tuesday by a 3rd District Court jury of two tax evasion counts, both second-degree felonies, and two counts of failure to file a proper tax return, which are third-degree felonies. Prosecutors say he evaded state taxes on more than $100,000 earned in 2005 and 2006.
Judge Judith Atherton has issued an arrest warrant for Drane.

He didn't fly away far enough.
