A weird (and perhaps on-topic) item in today's Tax Notes Today.
On October 15, the Social Security Administration released wages statistics for 2009, and reported that the wages earned by the top-paid people had increased five-fold, from average earnings of $91.2 million for the top 131 earners in 2008 to an average of $518.8 million earned by 74 people in 2009.
The SSA then looked more closely at the numbers, and realized that two people had filed multiple Forms W-2 reporting a total of $32.3 billion in wages. After examination, the SSA determined that the forms were false.
Taking that $32 billion out of the calculations reduces the top earners from an average of $518 million to "only" $84 million, and caused other significant changes to other wage statistics for 2009.
Apparently, no one has yet figured out whether the false filings were a prank or part of some kind of scam or fraud.
