15 minutes of infamy

Post by Demosthenes »

A tax protester who attempted to issue an arrest warrant for a federal judge was sentenced to 27 months in prison today for failing to file tax returns.

A jury found Darrell Stoffels, 59, of Larkspur, guilty on June 22, after 15 minutes of deliberation.
One week before his jury trial, Stoffels attempted to file a bench warrant for U.S. District Judge Christine M. Arguello.

The jury took 15 minutes? Must not have had any sovruns, just ordinary sensible folks.

Since I'm not an attorney, what can he get for the phony bench warrant?

I checked, and the phony "arrest warrant" issued by Darrell Stoffels consisted of 52 pages of gibberish, including attachments.

In the document, he did refer to himself as an "Attornatus Privatus," which is a nice touch.

The case is United States v. Stoffels, case no. 1:10-cr-00197-CMA, United States District Court for the District of Colorado (Denver Div.).

I never took Latin, but I'm thinking "sovronicus moronicus" has a nice poetic touch.

While not as colorful, the classic 'non compus mentis' is appropriate. 8)

I noticed that too. Just enough time for everyone to grab a coffee, introduce themselves, elect a spokesperson and all agree on guilty.

Have we found Skankbeat? One of his fans maybe? Or just a random nutcase?

Someone go post this over at LH on one of Skank's "You make your own common law" theads.

It takes a certain amount of testicular fortitude to try and pull this off. My guess is that if someone looked into this guy had pulled the same stunt on a local level first, it didn't work but it didn't cause much trouble for him. If Skanky is trying this stuff I would bet he is still in the local levels.

Depending upon the quality of the catering, jurors often protract deliberations long enough to have lunch on the county.

Reminds me of a cartoon I saw once, showing a jury foreman standing at the door of the jury room giving a lunch order to the bailiff: "11 hamburgers, one hot dog; 11 coffees, 1 tea; 11 brownies, 1 apple pie..."

One way is to set up a PACER account with the federal courts. It helps to have a credit card.

Here's the place where you register for PACER:

http://www.pacer.gov/register.html

The PACER web site for the U.S. District Court for the District of Colorado is here:

Anyone using PACER should also be using Recap extension for Firefox.
Automatic Upload

As you browse PACER, RECAP will upload docket files and PACER-downloaded PDFs to the Internet Archive for others to download. This happens transparently and adds nothing to your PACER fees. You will see a small notification box after each upload, which you can turn off if you wish. By simply installing RECAP, you are contributing to this growing public domain legal library.

Free Documents

On each docket page, RECAP will tell you whether a free version of each document is already available from the archive. If so, it will display a small “R” icon next to the document link, which allows you to download the public-domain document for free. Over time, this can save you considerable fee

Thanks for your help. I located the documents and read most of them. I found this all to be very sad and not worth 2 years behind bars. Not a battle I would have chosen....
