FMOTL Road Tax Scams

Was this scam exclusive to the UK or were other countrys stupid enough to permit it?:

1. Register your car at a PO box/false address.
2. Go to the Post Office and write a cheque out for your road tax.
3. Hand the cheque to the cashier.
4. Receive the 12 month tax disc from the cashier.
6. Go around the corner and empty the bank account.
7. Keep the tax disc and wait for the cheque to bounce.
8. When the awfully nice tax people write you an awfully nice letter asking you to return the tax disc, you simply ignore it.
9. You drive around everywhere and to all intents and purposes, you are a law abiding citizen who has paid your road tax.

Surely no other country had such a ridiculous system, that invited abuse from all sorts of fraudsters and crooks?

Obviously in the days of ANPR, this scam is now obsolete but I'm only talking 4 or 5 years ago when it was in full flow.

Why do FMOTL think they don't have to contribute to the upkeep of our roads and the maintaining of the DVLA? They are the first to go crying to the police if someone in authority contravenes a road traffic bye law.

The method you describe did not actually work. If the cheque bounced the disc was registered at DVLA as being invalid and you could be prosecuted for it.

A policeman stopping a car or a traffic warden checking the windscreen would simply see a valid disc and move on. Amazing how things have changed in such a short period of time isn't it?

Our local paper used to feature details of people who had been fined for this scam on a weekly basis. I dread to think what it cost the honest tax payers?

It would depend on your outlook. The course you described in the OP would mean the individual who wrote the cheque with the intention to empty the bank account before the cheque cleared has committed a criminal offence. If they did not care if they were eventually prosecuted then I suppose it did not matter.

I worked with somebody who bought their tax with a moody cheque some years ago. DVLA wrote to him and he did exactly the same thing again. He was done for attempted fraud (got 100 hours community service and a large fine IIRC) and DVLA tipped of the local plod who popped round and did him for having an untaxed car parked outside the house racking up another fine.

This was long before ANPR came into use.

For instance, before ANPR how many cheques intended to pay for VED bounced each year and what proportion of those people who wrote those cheques were followers of FOTL?

The real footle would write to DVLA in an attempt to "deregister" the car.
It normally resulted in hilarious consequences. Jail sometimes such as in the case of pleasuredome. Good days, good days. It was a laugh a minute.

This place isn't a playground. Facts and evidence are required here. Maybe you are not used to having to provide evidence? Requesting evidence is not being silly. Making false claims is silly.
