My maternal grandfather was born in 1876 in a very strict religious commune in Minnesota. His father was their blacksmith. He would sneak into town and buy 5 cent pulp novels about Buffalo Bill or Deadeyed Deadwood Dick, and dream of the kind of frontier excitement not present in strict religious insular societies. When he was 17 he ran off to the Black Hills of South Dakota and got a job running errands and sweeping out for a stage line in Hot Springs. He made enough to buy a small gold nugget which he brought home claiming to have panned from long-before panned-out streams. He was not received as the prodigal son should have been, so went up to Canada to chop down trees for railroad ties and make enough hard-won money to set himself up as a blacksmith to impress his displeased family. About 20 years later he realized this hadn't been the greatest career choice, and went into politics. He served 32 years in the North Dakota Legislature, which cost him almost as much in room and board as he made (not a lucrative career choice either), but he had the political bug and was a very stubborn man. To politically survive the Great Depression (which started early in North Dakota with a long drought), he joined the Non-Partisan League, a Populist group of Democrats and Republicans (my Grandfather being the later) who were simply looking out for small agricultural interests. Demagogues outside of the Midwest decided they were Socialists so my Grandfather found himself blacklisted by "Superpatriot" organizations. To make a long story short, this experience made him an angry and bitter man I didn't like and my parents were afraid of. To top it off, in the late 50's he sent them a report by the Kefauver Committee on juvenile delinquents and gangs which identified switchblade knives, television shows for kids, and comic books as the source of this evil. The first didn't effect me, but a ban on the later two around my house did, which was ironic as they were the then-equivalent of the pulp novels he read as a child. Anyway, I always tell people my Grandfather was a blacksmith not a politician because it's less embarrassing, and have an enduring hatred of politics as well as a high-quality, illegal-in-most-states, switchblade throwing knife.

Of course not. Iraqi Dinars are not as absorbent or comfortable to use as the real thing, regardless of the price. And they tend to clog pipes, which can run you into some real money (as far as I know, very few plumbers accept Iraqi Dinars as payment, and the ones that do tend to use IEDs instead of Roto-Rooters to clear sewer blockages).

The trigger for any crisis is generally pulled when a moratorium declared by its Central Banks on its billions of Dollars external debt obligations can not be met.

Central Banks who had follow the fixed-exchange-rate policy do so because they must.

It should be clear that a country in crisis would not be able to defend its currency even trading in a very wide band.

As panic emerges as seen else where rates shot up to 40% and more
(a country can give up its effort to maintain the band of a few percentage and instead float the currency).
To get the IMF's loans, the client country must meet stringent conditions, the main ones being an austerity budget or cuts in government spending and high interest rates in order to maintain investor confidence in the local currency.

In any case, this is only the start of a crisis that has already caused stock markets around the world to decline.
If the contagion spreads crashing down economies, value will
be subjected to speculative traders....

Whatever comes of the Dinar is a big whatever happens in any financial crisis.

Well, if the demi-crooks who have sold billions of Dinar to the clueless, stupid and greedy don't get indicted, it's only because they have blurred the line between currency exchange because you want to buy something in Iraq and selling currency as an investment, maybe some of the clueless, stupid and greedy will take a little justice into their own hands when they figure out what this release means..

At the end of last month, a spokesman for the Central Bank of Iraq (CBI) told reporters that a plan to redenominate the Iraqi dinar will be presented to the Council of Ministers in the near future. (See here and here.) The Council is then expected to submit the relevant legislation to Parliament for a vote. If the lawmakers approve the project, all existing banknotes will be replaced with new currency at the rate of 1,000 old dinar for one new over some unspecified period of time.

Given Parliament’s current backlog, this change can hardly be imminent. Still, you might think they could get around to voting on the CBI’s proposal some time before the end of this year. In that case, the redenomination could presumably be completed by the end of 2012.

The process will necessarily involve both the exchange of new banknotes for old and the restatement of contractual obligations in terms of the new currency. Among other things, three zeros will have to be eliminated from the share capital of the ISX listed companies as well as from the number of shares each has outstanding. (This will keep the par value at one dinar.)

I’m told this should be a relatively straightforward change for the depository center to make. Trading should not have to be suspended for more than a few days and it may be possible to proceed in phases of a few names at a time so that the entire market does not have to shut down during the transition period.

Similarly, it seems reasonable to expect the CBI to exchange new dinars for US dollars at one thousandth the rate for old dinars. In other words, if the original rate were IQD 1170 = US$ 1, post-redenomination this would become IQD 1.170 = US$ 1.

All of this seems reasonably straightforward for anyone holding assets such as currency or shares inside the country. For those holding dinar cash outside Iraq, however, things may not be so simple. How and on what terms their old dinars will be convertible into the new currency remains an open question.

oopsie! Could that mean all these idiots might have to go to Iraq to trade in their worthless money? What if they only let you bring so much to cash in? Or if they make it ellegal to cross the border in either direction with more than X amount? Maybe even a limit on how much non citizens are allowed to cash in? (Germany did that, BTW)

Yeah, Ali and the gang might need protection, seeing as a pretty big group of their suckers are also big in the Sov'run movement, and those folks ain't too smart but some of them have pretty impressive armories.

6:14 PM [rtt78] I'm not sure if any of you read this in PTR forum...I had posted it this morning. Not a rumor! My mother in law went to Chase bank (will not disclose location) today with some IQDs to see what they knew about the dinar. The lady (bank personnel) she talked to was very helpful....she said that, they were expecting for this to happen on June 30th, per the info they had....but for some reason it didn't. She said when they get any new information they will contact my mother in law and willbe happy to work with her. Also, she said right now they don't have any info about the IQD on their computers and not dealing with dong either......thanks.

[Blaino] OK, there is a large financial services company that pairs with one of the major banks here (USA) and they have a customer and employee sharing program related to wealth management. (I need to stop here for a second or two... "Wealth Management"... I like the way that rolls around in my brain... can't wait to get started with "Wealth Management!!!"... OK, pressing on now) Anyway... this company had many of their Reps set up "cash out/investment" appointments before the holiday weekend for Tuesday and Wednesday .... they even had these Reps come in to their offices on Monday for about a half a day for last minute preparations. (4th of July Holiday, no less!) Early Tuesday the appointment holders were called and stalled pending ..... movement! IQD movement. The attached major bank is very significant to the collection and transfer of the IQD to the UST.... sooo.... where does this tidbit of 'telligence take us? Is a major bank AND a major financial services company just tossing $$'s to the trash to maintain some illusion for our benefit? Or is there something more to it? I wouldn't think one should have to retain the services of Sherlock Holmes in order to determine the answer to this riddle, this elongated dinar debacle, this damnable delay... upon delay, upon delay and so on. As the Pope asked Michelangelo di Lodovico Buonarroti Simoni, working on the ceiling and frescos for the Sistine chapel "When will you make an end?!!" Again, with all these countries attempting to revalue at the same moment, I have ever growing doubts as to Iraq's continuing relavence to the whole matter and more convinced that they remain the convienient scapgoat foe excuses elsewhere, glitches, powerplays, tax games and fees of every type and manner. (that was the "WOW") and she believes that the "lock in rate" will be acheived before 6AM Eastern Standard Time, USA on "Thursday", July 7th, 2011.... as I first indicated almost two weeks ago on our CC and here in Planetary Commons. Okay guys . . . here is the latest . . . I have multiple sources worldwide that states the RV has occurred . . . and that the IQD will be on the forex sometime today [Monday – 06/06] . . . I am waiting to hear from a U.S. Bank that I was just informed that is cashing in today [Monday – 06/06] . . . . I am awaiting confirmation of that fact . . . we are now seeing the largest transfer of wealth in history . . . I will keep you current with the Intel . . . I am on top of it . . . praise the Lord

Hold on here….. let’s google Okie Oil Man and see just how many posts Okie has made over the years. Not once has he been ahead of the curve to get anything he said right. Now , hang tough with me on this one. Okie is the ” king of the pump up the volume pump up the dinar” every weekend. I was chastised for accusing Okie and the Guru’s ( do I need the name them?) ahhhh nope… about them being involved in the sale of dinar. I heard from My Intel (who I can not say it is since he is high up in a 3 Letter agency) well his sister’s mother on his father’s side by way of a distant cousin who just opened a bank account in Iceland, that SEARS is naming a washing machine after Okie the Oil Man. They have been searching for years for the biggest agitator that would get the skid marks out of boxer shorts ( strickly designed for the gurus)…. and they think they have found their new spokesperson…. The sad part is that when it hits, Jokie Okie will puff up his ego and be screaming ” I told you it has happened”…. when it does reval.
