From the perspective of an American, this law enforcement encounter sounds like it was written for an American TV show poking fun at stereotypical Canadian politeness. Think: a "Married With Children" episode titled "Our Toronto Vacation."
It's a strict requirement that after any police interaction the offender has to be released into a safe situation. After his breathalyzer back at the station, formal charges, and vehicle impoundment he would be released. If he had no money in his pocket or a friend to get him home he rates a police taxi.

Seriously though Keith Moro, his brother, and what appears to be their shared girlfriend all worked for Kevin Kumar and all three could star in episodes of "World's Dumbest Criminals". The woman got trapped in an undersink cupboard while attempting to hide during a drug bust. His brother got caught with a large quantity of coke on the dash of his vehicle and had to attempt a hot potato defence. Keith thought he had the perfect bank caper planned - rob a bank in Union Station in Toronto, escape through crowds of commuters and hop on a bus/train/subway as a get away. Too bad while exiting the bank he shoved into a burly construction worker, tired and irritable after a long day, who was still wearing his tool belt. A 24 ounce framing hammer came into play and his escape was thwarted.

A hybrid hearing means that some participants are actually in the courtroom, others appear remotely usually via video. Almost the standard in my province (Alberta) for first appearances etc if the offender is in remand. Viau is trying to claim that some of his rights have been violated - maybe Jordan or Gladue or he's off on some sort of Magner Carter tangent. Normally I would watch it but I'm working the upcoming election and have prep work that day. You know, getting those computerized voting machines ready (sharpening 200 pencils) :haha:
Thanks for that eric, I see Viau is due for an appearance in person tomorrow (Thursday 10th April) at the Superior Court in North Bay for the same "Constitutional Issue".
