Browns' festival quashed
Marshals block cars from couple's property

Supporters of Ed and Elaine Brown hoping to attend their "Fall Freedom Fest" party in Plainfield yesterday were turned away by federal marshals, who established a checkpoint on Center of Town Road.

According to U.S. Marshal Stephen Monier, his officers and the local police stopped all cars heading toward the house. Party-goers were photographed, given a warning flier and asked to return home, according to accounts from several would-be festival attendees.

Marshals made one arrest. Lauren Canario, who has demonstrated frequently on behalf of the tax protesting couple, was arrested after she failed to follow instructions, Monier said.

"After being told, (she) several times tried to get by our deputies," he said. Monier said his office was consulting with the U.S. Attorney about possible charges.

Another pair of Brown supporters lost their car, after a registration check found that Russell and Kat Kanning's vehicle was overdue. Local police handled the seizure, Monier said.

Monier said that his office was blocking access to the party because of concerns about public safety.

"We're very concerned, as is local law enforcement, about the hazardous conditions we know are on the property," he said.

Earlier this week, marshals arrested four people who had helped the Browns over the course of their eight-month standoff. The couple were both sentenced to 63 months in prison after being convicted of tax-related crimes. But they have evaded arrest, remaining holed up in their fortified concrete home, where they have subsisted on solar electricity, stored food and gifts from a rotating cast of supporters. The Browns argue that there is no law making them liable for federal income taxes and have vowed to die before surrendering.

In a press conference earlier this week, Monier confirmed reports that marshals are concerned about possible booby traps on the property. According to the Suffolk County, N.Y., police, a pipe bomb and other weapons were recovered at the home of one of the arrested supporters earlier this week.

According to recently unsealed court documents, one of the supporters told marshals in June that he had seen two black-powder explosive devices with fuses on the property.

According to the document, Danny Riley, of Cohoes, N.Y., who was arrested this week, said he'd seen the bombs and Brown had told him that there were 10 or 20 more on the property, designed for use as grenades if there was a raid. Riley also told investigators that he had personally purchased 12 pounds of tannerite, a chemical used to make explosives, the report says.

Yesterday's would have been the third concert and party hosted at the Brown home since their convictions, but it is the first the marshals have prevented from proceeding. The most recent event there was a "Jamboree" that featured bands and drew about 100 visitors in July, since Riley's interview with the marshals.

Monier said he could not comment on specific evidence, but did say that his office had "recent information that indicates that there are hazardous conditions on the property," that made yesterday's event of particular concern.

It was the second time marshals restricted access to the road. On a June day when authorities seized a commercial property in West Lebanon owned by the couple, they also closed surrounding roads and brought in state police SWAT teams and an explosives unit, after Riley stumbled on a surveillance team near the property. Marshals interviewed him later that day.

According to Kat Kanning, the flier distributed by marshals warned supporters that they could be arrested for visiting or helping the Browns.

"By order of the US District Court, no one may enter or remain on the property known as 401 Center of Town Road, Plainfield, New Hampshire, which is the defendants' residence, without the express authorization of the US Marshals 'Service' or its designee," the flier reads, according to a transcription Kanning posted online yesterday. "Whoever enters or remains on the property without the express authorization of the US Marshals and or refuses to leave the property may be criminally prosecuted see 18 USC 111 (assaulting, resisting or impeding certain officers or employees), 402 (contempt constituting crimes, 1501 (assault on a process server) and 1509 (obstruction of court orders)."

Canario has said online that she's brought the couple food on several occasions and given them her cell phone to use after marshals cut the couple's phone service.

By four yesterday afternoon, Monier said his officers had only turned away about 20 cars.

"Between the announcements about the arrests and the weather, there were not too many people showing up," he said.

Unfortunately, the pipe connecting the house to the septic system is under ground and runs from the basement to the septic tank.

I am in favor knocking out the solar panels (those things are darn fragile) and the windmill. This would also know out the well water (unless it is an artesian well). One of those fifty caliber rifles would do wonders to the generator in the windmill.

Unfortunately, that also potentially knocks out the neighbors, depending on how the lines run. I'm sure there are chemicals that one can flush down a toilet that would make a septic tank backup. It wouldn't take much to convince a supporter that flushing it down the tank would keep the tank healthy.

Browns' supporter will remain jailed until trial

CONCORD, N.H. (AP) -- A Vermont man charged with knowingly assisting a pair of convicted New Hampshire tax evaders elude authorities will remain jailed until his trial in November.

Robert Wolffe, of Randolph, Vt., decided midway through a court hearing that he would not contest authorities' wish to keep him in custody. The decision was announced just as the hearing was reconvening to play video of an interview between Wolffe and a deputy U.S. Marshal, and an Internet radio interview with his wife, Valeri Wolffe.

Federal prosecutor Arnold Huftalen argued Wolffe posed a flight risk based on statements made on the Internet.

He said Wolffe e-mailed a manual to his wife, a Department of Transportation employee, describing how to kill government employees. He also said Valeri Wolffe, a fellow supporter of Ed and Elaine Brown, had hidden guns and packed suitcases in her car when authorities arrived to search her home last week.

Wolffe's lawyer disputed the claims, describing Robert Wolffe as a responsible worker with strong ties in the community.

I wonder what was in that interview that made Robert Wolfe decide not to contest the bail issue?

I listened to the radio interview between Mark Koerkne and Valeri Wolffe the night of the arrests. Koernke (who was recently released from Federal prison after a long stay) was advising her to remove all the guns from the house asap before the Marshals came back for them. She though that sounded like a swell idea and even packed a couple of bags to hit the road as soon as Bob was released at his arraignment.

So Valeri was sucking at the government teat while plotting the overthrow of the IRS and the evil federal government. Classic.

I bet Wolffe gave up a lot of info to the Marshal (like Danny did earlier) and would do anything now for it not to be heard.

Or maybe he begged and cried to be released or maybe he declared his man-love for Ed.....

Prosecutors: Browns' supporter left evidence trail on Internet

CONCORD, N.H. (AP) -- A Vermont man charged with helping convicted tax evaders Ed and Elaine Brown evade authorities left a trail of evidence all over the Internet showing his allegiance, authorities said Monday.

Robert Wolffe showed his devotion to the Browns and his wish for an armed showdown with authorities via blogs and e-mail, even e-mailing a manual on how to kill government officials to his wife at work - an employee in the Vermont division of the Federal Highway Administration - a federal prosecutor alleged.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Arnold Huftalen also read from a blog with a supply list and instructions for sending packages to the Browns in care of Wolffe, an Army veteran. The list, giving Wolffe's name and address, sought items ranging from cardboard to night vision goggles and camouflage clothing, but the "number one most important thing" is "people to come and make a stand to their death if necessary."

The Browns insist there is no law requiring payment of federal taxes. Ed Brown has said he will resort to an armed confrontation if authorities try to take him and his wife by force.

Regardless of their views on taxes, "the supporters of the Browns ... have been energized by the desire to force the government into an armed confrontation," Huftalen said Monday as he argued for Wolffe to be jailed until a November trial.

Defense lawyer Paul Garrity at first disputed Huftalen's characterization of Wolffe as a dangerous flight risk with a potential for violence. He said federal authorities had mischaracterized earlier statements by Wolffe and asked that Wolffe be released under supervision to return to his job as a technician for a propane company.

Garrity said Wolffe wanted a peaceful end to the Browns' self-imposed siege. "(Wolffe's) not one who's going to outwardly lash out at anyone," he said.

But Garrity did not get far. Wolffe decided midway through the hearing that he would not contest authorities' wish to keep him in custody. The decision was announced just as the hearing was reconvening to play video of an interview between Wolffe and a deputy U.S. Marshal, and an Internet radio interview with his wife, Valeri Wolffe.

Valeri Wolffe appeared shocked by her husband's decision, exclaiming "What!" as the judge made the announcement.

She refused to speak to reporters at the hearing.

Robert Wolffe is one of four men arrested last week and charged with providing supplies and other help to the Browns, who each face prison sentences of more than five years following their conviction on federal tax evasion charges in January. His Web site, bobwolffe.com, was disabled Monday. He is being held at the Strafford County jail.

Huftalen said Valeri Wolffe told authorities that she and her husband had visited the Browns more than a dozen times together and shot guns with Ed Brown. Marshals had observed Wolffe's car on the Browns' property and observed Wolffe on armed security patrol there, Huftalen said.

Huftalen said authorities visited Valeri Wolffe at home on the day of her husband's arrest and saw a loaded AK-47 on a couch and a loaded Ruger rifle propped near a doorway. Hours later when they returned with a search warrant, they didn't see any guns. Deputies searched Valeri Wolffe's car, and found three rifles and four handguns hidden in the rear of the car, four full boxes of ammunition and two suitcases packed with the couple's clothes, Huftalen said.

"The defendant was intending to flee, most likely to the Browns' residence" Huftalen said.

Garrity said all of the guns were legally owned.

I sure as shit hope that Ms. "How to Kill Federal Employees" Wolffe loses her job at the DOT.
