A former Binghamton man was convicted in federal of filing false claims for tax refunds with the Internal Revenue Service, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office.
Evidence presented during the trial showed that he sent six tax refund claims totaling more than $1 million to the IRS that he knew to be false, officials said.
Court documents stated that in 2010, the U.S. Department of the Treasury received “sovereign citizen” propaganda from Cavanaugh reflecting a “right-wing anarchist ideology” that the U.S. government is illegitimate.
