The man accused of abducting and tying up his daughter in a hotel is a self-described Sovereign Citizen, part of an anti-government group, according to a federal complaint filed Friday.
Sovereign Citizen has been -- according to "60 Minutes" -- identified by the FBI as a top domestic terrorist threat.
Martin J. Jonassen, of Missouri, has been identified in a federal complaint for kidnapping. He has also been charged in Porter County Superior Court with two counts of confinement and one count of battery, according to court records. He is being held at the Porter County Jail on a $50,000 bond.
At 21, Jonassen's daughter had never been to school and only read books about religion, history and the government approved by her father. According to the report, she had only been to see a doctor once in her life prior to the recent incident.
I'll also wager Q10,000 that this schmuck will never, ever truly understand why what he did was wrong.

In his mind he didn't do anything wrong. She was his "property" to do with as he chose, and he is being persecuted by de ebil guvmint.
The one thing I have found a constant in the Sovrun Citizen groupings, particularly to the ones with marital problems, and they all seem to have them, is that de ebil guvmint keeps intruding on their god given rights to do as they damn well please, and if that includes knocking the wife and kids around then so be it, or well, I don't feel like going in to the rest of it and keeping my blood pressure down. There is usually a long litany of the abuses they have suffered, like their wives being "allowed" to divorce them without their approval, their children being brought up without their strict control, and more specifically about how they are being forced to pay child support alimony and the like when they don't feel like it, if their proputy dun run off, then why should they have to pay for its upkeep any longer. In fairness I will say that there are some of them who have gotten screwed by the system, but it is usually by their own efforts at playing games with or ignoring the courts when they did have the chance to speak up and they ended up where are by their own best efforts.
To say I find this beyond creepy is an understatement.

I have come across at least 3 court decisions, appeals from convictions for various sorts of child molesting, in which the defendants tried to claim immunity on the grounds that they were some sort of Sov'runs who hadn't consented to be put on trial.
Y'all remember when I said there were times someone could do something that would warrant immediate removal from the national gene pool a la capital punishment?

Pretty much the argument of choice they use when they go in to lose in family court, or else the old stand by r4v that always works.

Family members also have said Jonassen admitted to purposely causing a car accident that killed his oldest daughter, Koster said.

His wife said only if there was an emergency, according to Koster, after which Jonassen drove down the middle of a highway and swerved into a car, causing an accident.
Koster said Jonassen then called to tell his wife there had been an emergency and that she should "come back now."

A man charged with kidnapping a relative who escaped in Portage has filed a letter purporting to be from his victim saying she retracts anything she has said about the case.
Martin Jonassen, who owns property in Kansas, Michigan and Missouri, filed the notice Tuesday in the U.S. District Court in Hammond along with another motion to dismiss his two charges of kidnapping and obstruction of justice.
A Kansas man accused of kidnapping a relative and tying her up in a Portage hotel has been charged in federal court with an additional count of attempting to influence the testimony of the alleged victim.

The court can't give that young woman a shiny, happy childhood--they can't turn back time. What kind of recompense is there, really, for that kind of systemic, enduring misery? At the very least, the father should have to spend every waking second of his incarceration writing "I'm a worthless piece of scum and unworthy of the designation 'father,'" on lined paper until carpal tunnel sets in. Then they can cut it down to 100 times a day, just to keep it fresh in his memory.
