New Humble Indie Bundle bundle and gaming question

Post by Burzmali »

First off, new a Humble Indie Bundle is out, now with 100% more Android support. A couple of the games have been in prior bundles, but all-in-all still a strong offering, especially considering the Android support.

Also, as many folks around here seem to enjoy gaming, what y'all playing these days? Recently, I've been playing mostly indie titles (Dungeons of Dredmor, Super Meat Boy), a few old school titles (Darklands, Wizardry 7) and the stray borderline mainstream release (The Witcher 2).

Kiddo, I'm old...school. Gaming involves a big table, good friends, and lots of excellent food and beer. The spouse is fond of PC games, and I've done a fair amount of X box gaming, no particular favorites at the moment. Looking to go buy Skyrim for the spousal unit, then buy myself a ticket to Hawaii for a family wedding.

He wants the PC version, Wes. Although I must admit the graphics for Conan online are very impressive when he sneaks up behind a guard and cuts the guard's throat. The dream system he recently acquired is one reason I won't be guilty at leaving him to feed the fishies and cats while I check out the beaches in Hawaii. Next I gotta decide between going purple with my hair and matching pedicure, or sticking with blue. Purple is sorta a family tradition. (And a fantasy thing for Brandybuck, if I go for it I'll have to finally let someone take my pic...)

Super Meat Boy is retro platforming distilled to its pure essence and mixed with a combination of ghost peppers and Jack Daniels.

I'm still not sold, Oblivion was a big disappointment for me after Morrowind. I'm still not sold on the "every line in the game must be voice act!" mantra chanted for all AAA RPGs.

Tried Skyrim and couldnt get into to it. Havent really gotten into any of the newer MMORPGs since Runes of Magic and only left it because of the idiocy of Frogster and Runewaker. Tried Rift and was highly disappointed in it, much hooplah and nothing really new. Still hoping Guild Wars 2 comes out soon and saves me from the un-ending blahs. Been stuck playing Lord of Ultima lately since they havent seemed to screw that one up too bad yet. X-Box got the RROD and havent replaced it yet and never got into any of the Wii games and cant keep the kids off of it anyway. Up until a few years ago we were still playing Rifts the old fashioned way, 4-5 of us around a big table with pencils and notebooks and bags of dice. My kids even got into it a little bit, even though my ex was fully convinced that D&D was the game of Satan worshippers. Been playing RPGs of some sort for over 30 years too, since the boxed editions of D&D. Played all of the offshoots at one point or another, from all the companies out there. They were the best times.

Incidentally, for all those who cannot resist stopping when they see a yard sale, the D & D manuals, especially the hardcovers that were only printed briefly (I'm recalling a monster compendium I picked up for the spouse on a whim, which I later saw a much worse copy for sale for $250) are occasionally worth buying.

I have the damnedest luck at yard sales. Picked up what I thought was a piece of dicroic glass just to fool with, artistically, and only later discovered (confirmed by another jeweler) I'd acquired the biggest opal triplet I've ever seen. I didn't even know Aussie blacks came with that much purple in them. That was this summer's big find. I seem to get something unique every summer.

I used to sell depression glass to dealers (or trade for what I wanted) but the antiques market in that range has taken a serious hit with the economy. Saw a pair of jadite shakers identical to the ones I sold to a dealer for $75 ten years ago, now retailing at $50. So now I'm up to five crates of depression glass stored in my garage for better times, when I will sell them. But first I'm knocking the socks off my nephew's bride by giving them an entire perfect set of Morrocan Amethyst as a wedding gift, serving pieces and table service for eight. Next I'm filling in a set of Dragonware for my niece. By being generous, I hope to someday see my garage floor again...

Me, too. I still have Magic Realm, and tried to teach my kids. Nope, no interest. If it doesn't include an electronic display of some type, it's too boring to play.

Face it, CKB, we're dinosaurs.
I am even old enough to have played board wargames from Avalon Hill and Strategy and Tactics (S&T). Still love The East Is Red, Panzerblitz and Panzer Leader. Close to 40 years of gaming.
You left out the granddaddy, Tactics II, on the same level as any of 'em. But PanzerBlitz was my favorite wargame. I wasted days on it in college. AFAIK, it was the first board game to incorporate the detail one previously only found in field manuals. Combine that with the isomorphic board, the absolute necessity of using combined arms, and the ability to design your own scenarios, and you have one hellacious time-waster. My friends and I designed a scenario in which the Germans and Russians were fighting over the campus.

My first computer game was Zork, on a mainframe. Flood Control Dam #3!

You guys remember "student" who used to post here on Quatloos? He made millions in the early 1990s as the creator of the Duke Nukem games. Didn't pay taxes on the income, and lives in Thailand now.
Demo.

I made it all the way through the Colossal Cave myself. Did some Zork, but never actually got all the way to the end.
