Destry Marcotte, 47, was found guilty following a two-day bench trial, U.S. Attorney Stephen R. Wigginton, announced today. Marcotte was taken into custody and will be held without bond until sentencing which is expected in January. He could receive up to 20 years behind bars.

I also thought it pretty strange that a sovrun would waive a jury, so I checked the docket. It was a two-day jury trial. While the news article Lambkin cites wrote "Destry Marcotte, 47, was found guilty following a two-day bench trial, U.S. Attorney Stephen R. Wigginton, announced today", U.S. Attorney Stephen R. Wigginton actually announced "Destry Marcotte, 47, of Belleville, Illinois, was convicted of four counts of filing false claims for federal tax refunds following a two-day jury trial".

Maybe the reporter thought that the jurors were sitting on a bench.

It makes me glad that in my line of work when I receive an invalid request I simply return the number 400 and that's the end of the transaction.

I suggest that the US court system start returning error codes such as the one above. Some examples:

400 Non-standard filing format not accepted
401 Document filed by someone who is not a party or legal representative in the case
402 Filing fee required
403 Argument(s) not allowed due to numerous failures of said argument(s)
407 Lawyer needs to prove (s)he is really allowed to practice law.
408 Document took too long to read, couldn't finish.
409 Facts stated in document contradict facts stated earlier by same party
410 Case over, appeals exhausted, docket closed.
411 Document exceeds allowable size.
417 You really didn't think that would work, did you?
418 I'm a teapot.
422 Document is word salad.
423 Too many bogus filings, docket is in moderated mode.
429 Too many filings, quit spamming the docket.

Reminds me of when I was a Passport Office adjudicator. Occassionally a passport would be issued with an 'endorsement' (=restriction), such as "for diplomatic purposes only" "good only for 60 days" (- for an emergency passport issued with less than full documentation).

I suggested, for obnoxious applicants (of which there seemed to no shortage): "Good only outward bound."
