Toll Road violation

Post by Arthur Rubin »

I don't know whether this one is a scam; I'd bet on it, but not with overwhelming odds.

I received an E-mail from "E-ZPass Manager", with my wife's first name, our E-mail address, and a toll violation notice.

The text reads:
Dear (wife's first name),

You have not paid for driving on a toll road.
Please service your debt in the shortest possible time.

The invoice is attached to this email.

Regards,
(name),
E-ZPass Manager.
The attachment is a .js file within a .zip file. (JavaScript says it's malformed; run in a safe compartment.) And the return address is at mobi.le-weekend.ch.

I have one of these passes; and my account is set up for automatic replenishment. Were that not so, I would receive a bill in the mail (for open-toll roads) or a bill plus a ticket (for closed-toll roads) -- never and e-mail. This is a scam, without a doubt.

If that's not spoofed, the .ch indicates Switzerland.

Those European Toll roads will get ya every time.

I sent them my credit card details and they sorted it out for me.

I hope you're kidding.

I get these periodically, and I don't have an EZ-Pass. Ohio did join EZ-Pass a few years ago for the Ohio Turnpike, but I seldom drive on it. When I do, I simply pay cash.

Its a scam.

Same as what everyone else said, it's a phish. We had ez-pass in MD, including the ICC where you could only drive if you had an ez-pass. I never had one and have never used one yet I got a couple dozen of these emails.

I only got an EZPass because a road going into Boston went to open tolling; and more are expected to follow suit, so since the jobs are being lost anyway and since I don't want to be bothered with toll bills, I got two transponders, for my wife and myself.

Its a scam.
Not to shill for EZ pass but they stuck one where I'm at at the best route so it's not exactly optional, pre-paying saves quite a bit of time and it's cheaper.

Who is "them"? Did they contact you via email? Snail Mail? Phone?

If it was email, was the return address in Switzerland?

It's altogether possible you dealt with a legitimate representative of EZ Pass while what was sent in the email to Arthur was a scammer attempting to use the name of EZ Pass in order to trick funds out of unsuspecting individuals.

Just to clarify, I was joking about emailing my credit card details to a random email address.
