Post by Duke2Earl »

I received the following email today...

Notification of Tax Refund on your VISA or MasterCard Now,

> After the last annual calculations of your fiscal activity we have determined
that you are eligible to receive a tax refund of $209.30.

> A refund can be delayed for a variety of reasons.

Fox example submitting invalid records or applying after the deadline.

> Sorry for any inconvenience this may cause and thank you for your patience.

> To access the form for your tax refund please click the link below
http://pound.ecel.uwa.edu.au/mail/IRS.gov/Tax.html

> Note: For security reasons, we will record your ip-address, the date and time.
Deliberate wrong inputs are criminally pursued and indicated.

Lots of crooks out there.

The IRS regularly issues public warnings against these kinds of email. See, for example, IR 2007-109, originally issued in May but updated on 9/19/2007.

Obviously a fake, everyone knows that the copyright notice should have said "Internal Revenue Service Inc, Puerto Rico".

A notice on the IRS web site suggesting forwarding them to phishing@irs.gov, so they can take appropriate action.

I don't know if they still want them, though.

Yes, they do. New sites pop up daily.

I arranged for my email to be forwarded to the IRS at the same time I posted it here.

Really? I thought it was alcohol producers, not gunsmiths. Huh. Learn something new every day.
