Biddeford Couple Faces More Than 1,500 Years In Prison

PORTLAND, Maine -- A couple from Biddeford faces more than 1,500 years in prison for wire fraud and tax evasion.

Johanne M. Elie, 48, and Ricky L. Elie, 41, were indicted by a federal grand jury sitting in Portland on Tuesday. The indictment alleged that over nearly five years, the defendants charged personal expenses and then paid for them with checks drawn on a bank account of their employer, Provencher's. Paperwork also said they caused interstate wires to be used to collect the embezzled checks and then didn't claim the money on their tax returns from 2001 to 2004.

The Elies each face up to 20 years in prison for each of the 75 wire fraud charges and 5 years in prison for each of the four tax evasion charges. They also face fines of up to $250,000 on each charge and could be forced to pay back the money they gained from the scheme.

United States Attorney Paula D. Silsby said the investigation was conducted by the Internal Revenue Service, Criminal Investigation Division, the Biddeford Police Department and the United States Postal Service.
