Cap'n Alice, this is Cap'n Dumpty. Cap'n Dumpty, this is Cap'n Alice. Call it in the air, Hump.
I was going to go with the believing six impossible things before breakfast, but PLD must do it all the time.

No, I'll stand with tautology, OED and Wikipedia seem to agree with me. Any way, when I use a word it means exactly what I want it to mean, no more and no less :-)

Your use is possible but not exclusive. Foreign Englishes may differ.
We found that out with "growler".

Please allow some exceptions. I sincerly believed it was a four wheeled hansom cab; it is some time since I have been on the 'street' as I believe they call it, to hear this modern stuff.

I know, I know, from time to time you and Dr. Watson meet in the Saloon bar at the Princess Louise and, over a porter, bemoan those devilish new omnibusses that spew smoke into the overwhelming foggy London miasma. Where will it all end? Flying machines?

A formatting suggestion. If you want to quote a post, such as the one of mine you put in italics, just look to the right of the post heading. You'll see a toolbar. Click on the one on the far right and it will set up the post as a quote ready for your reply. I've taken the liberty of modifying your prior post to illustrate how it looks.

Thank you, I will try that format and see how it looks. I assume it is possible to quote selectively?

Not porter. That's for the Public Bar. A good cask ale would be more appropriate for the Saloon or Lounge bar, and I suspect Moriaty might be found lurking in the Snug.

Nor would I say that here. The correct phrase is "refill please."

Two ways to quote selectively;

1 - Quote the whole thing as I instructed before and then just delete what you don't want.

2 - Open up a new reply. You'll see a tool bar at the top of the reply box. Click on 'Quote' and you'll get something like this;

[quotex]
I added the x so that it was not a live quote caption. If it was it wouldn't display. Then copy what you want from the prior post and paste it between the quote symbols like this;

[quotex]Thank you, I will try that format and see how it looks. I assume it is possible to quote selectively?
Without the x this is what you get;

I'm familiar with that meaning. I've also seen it used to mean a police car. The, um, other meaning is new to me.

Another PLD win, Andy's Dad has been 'got' (arrested) by a warrant officer for none payment of Coucil Tax - failure to attend commital proceedings I believe, Ollie Pillock all over again only this one (allegedly) ain't paying.

Yes, you just insert "[ /quote]" to end a quote box and "[ quote]" to start a new one.
