Got one! Pub, pond (stream really), green, and more or less en route. If this isn't good enough for HRH screw it. If the wife requires a post-office she can find her own damn green. Good luck with that!

I'll keep Barrowdale in mind as a backup since we'll be in the area anyhow. Same with Tickhill, we can pass through between Lincoln and Yorkshire. Tholthorpe also a worthwhile drop-by since we'll be in Yorkshore.
I may check this out too;

Still open to suggestions if anyone thinks of something meeting the requirements of SWMBO, pond, green, pub, (Post Office definitely optional). Thanks everyone.

No, not been to Lincoln castle. I'm not really a castle guy, prefer cathedrals. I've also climbed to the top of York Minster and St. Pauls. St. Pauls was great. You go up through the interior of the dome. Note the little porthole right at the top;
Been up there peering out of it. Had to climb a ladder.

Bishop Burton is a nice stop, roughly between York & Hull at the foot of the Yorkshire Wolds. And there's a pleasant looking ye olde pub hiding to the right of the pic.

Actually way ahead of you on that one. That was one of the first places I checked because I've been to the Altistidora (name of a famous race horse) a number of times and remembered the duck pond. However I decided that it wouldn't meet my wife's extremely demanding requirements for a tranquil bit of Ye Olde England because the York Road, that runs right past the pond, can be extremely busy with a lot of heavy traffic.Hercule Parrot wrote: ↑Wed Jun 06, 2018 6:30 pm Bishop Burton is a nice stop, roughly between York & Hull at the foot of the Yorkshire Wolds. My wife has already been to, or at least through, Bishop Burton although she doesn't remember. In the 90's she and I took a day trip from Hull to York by bus. It passed right by the green and pub.
Reviewing the issue I'll keep Bishop Burton on the list in case we're nearby.

So will you be watching some local cricket while you're there? Or some authentic queensbury barefisted boxing?

Do you have any concept how incredibly tedious cricket is? A single match can go on for days.

Back in my school days...
Games teacher: "Why are you not joining in?"
Me: "I don't know the rules"
Games teacher: "How can you not know the rules of cricket?"
Me: "I couldn't give a toss"
A weeks detention subsequently commuted to an absolute discharge by head of year
I still neither know nor care.

One pub for days? Do you think we've reached a total of having a beer in 1,343 different British pubs by lingering? It's the very rare pub that warrants our staying for even two beer, never mind a day.

Re: A Village Green Quandry
In the North York Moors area Newton-on-Rawcliffe might fit the requirements.
It’s been a few years since I was there, but Apple maps shows there’s still an (admittedly small) green complete with pond and pub.
And I’ll give another mention to Hutton-le-Hole.
The basic problem is that village greens weren’t that numerous in the first place, at least not after the middle ages and out of what’s left lots are now just the grass patch around a road junction.

Re: A Village Green Quandry
Thanks, I've sent my wife a link to Google Street View of the Newton-on-Rawcliffe green and asked her if it is what she wants. I've also sent her a link to Finchingfield. I'll let her decide. Newton is good because that's exactly the area we're going.
That's certainly been my experience. Grass at a junction is about it. The village green in my wife's mind may be a mythical construct that doesn't exist anywhere.The basic problem is that village greens weren’t that numerous in the first place, at least not after the middle ages and out of what’s left lots are now just the grass patch around a road junction.

Winner Winner Chicken Dinner! I sent my wife Street View link of Newton-on-Rawcliffe and Finchingfield. She like Finchingfield best but said that either would do. So Newton for sure and maybe Finchingfield.
That inane opening sentence is an actual quote from a moron. My wife and I, in a drive through the American South (Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, Florida, Louisiana, South Carolina) spent a night in Vicksburg, the third saddest town I've been to in the in the United States. We were in a Casino getting something to eat and within earshot of the gaming tables. The moron wasn't gambling, he was with his wife who was throwing dice. Every time she'd make a throw he'd shout that out before she let go. Over and over.
The second saddest was Montgomery Alabama, the state capital. We were there because the wife wanted to see the church where Martin Luther King got his start. Complete abject poverty right up to the doors of the majestic state capital. The downtown was totally deserted at 7PM on a weekday afternoon. Not even traffic. We ended up eating at a Subways on the outskirts of town.
The saddest, to be blunt, shithole I've ever been in was Cairo Illinois (yes, I've been to Wigan and Nelson Lancashire). It is at the junction of the Mississippi and Ohio rivers and was very important in the Civil War. Grant headquartered his army here during his drive down the Mississippi to take Vicksburg. It had what must have once been a beautiful downtown of civil war era buildings with a bustling waterfront to meet the river trade. But, by the time I went through, the entire downtown had been abandoned except for Fat Boys, an extremely decrepit bar. How decrepit? The buildings around the bar were actually collapsing. The ruins were in the street. The bar looked ready to go anytime. Here's a shot of it (now closed);
https://www.google.ca/maps/@37.0012741, ... 6656?hl=en
Yes, I stopped and had a beer in that fine establishment. How could I not? Even SteveUK's penchant for shit bars would have been sated by the Fat Boys and its patrons. As big a dump as any I've seen (except the Sunrise and the Vanport) in Vancouver's Skid Row, the gold standard for dumps. Note the absence of the decaying buildings I mentioned. After we passed through the whole downtown area around the bar was razed as a public safety hazard. The bar was the only 'safe' building in the area.
This is more or less what the buildings looked like when they were still there;

Goathland in the North Yorkshire Moors, you can take the Steam Train from Pickering or Whitby. It was the setting for a long run series of TV Programmes called Heartbeat, 1960's Police drama and has retained it's 1960's feel.
