Until quite recently UK passports weren't issued to babies or young children and they travelled on the strength of their parent's passport.

This was 50+ years ago, passports weren’t issued for babies or children until relatively recently in the UK. I was 14 before I left the Country (would have been late 1970’s) and pretty sure I traveled on my fathers passport.

A quick google doesn't reveal anything, but I distinctly remember a TV journalist rescuing a child from a war torn middle eastern country he was in. All he did was write his name in the children section on his passport.
I know I was taken on holidays to Spain in the late 60's/early 70's & me & my brothers were just written lines in my mother's passport.

Thanks for that, didn't realise it was Michael Nicholson.
I remember his Falklands & Gulf War 2 reports very well. I didn't know he had recently died, from his Wiki page seems he had a very eventful career in journalism. always came across as a thoroughly decent bloke.

A great story here from the Isle of Man.

A man was stopped for driving offences but refused his details.
Mr Heading first appeared in court last Tuesday when he said that his name was a ’legal fiction’ and then refused to speak to High Bailiff Jayne Hughes after saying he did not acknowledge that the court had any jurisdiction.

Mrs Hughes entered not guilty pleas on Mr Heading’s behalf and remanded him in custody after he ignored requests for a bail address or a bail application.
Go go Mrs Hughes!
But on Thursday, after being on remand in Jurby, Mr Heading answered to his name and address and confirmed that he wanted to continue with the not guilty pleas.

He is accused of driving with no insurance, having a vehicle with no registration mark and having no vehicle licence.

Prosecutor Barry Swain said that the prosecution case was that Mr Heading was stopped by police on the Mountain Road on July 12 at 1.35pm while driving a Renault Clio with a number plate which read ’CLCJurby’.
Another adherent of the Common Law Court bites the dust. What must he have been thinking?

“I know, to show my footle credentials I’ll drive about this small island with made up plates - no plod will dare touch me!”

Inevitably he crumbled after a few self-induced days on a porridge diet. A date for your diaries;
When police spoke to him it is alleged that he told them: ’I do not consent. I do not recognise your jurisdiction. I have the right to remain silent.’
A trial will now take place on August 6. Mr Heading was granted bail in the sum of £500.

I really like the Dickensian feel of 'Jurby', and how much the FOTLers would like being judged by a High Baliff.

RAF Jurby, sometime home of the Officers Advanced Training School (OATS). It seemed appropriate that it was located at a remote windswept location on an island. Even after it moved to RAF Henlow and had its name changed to the Junior Command and Staff School (JCSS) you still had to do sword drill.

A friend of mine is a niece (or is it great niece?) of Alan Moore who created V for Vendetta* and apparently he hates the way V has been hijacked as a frontman under the "anonymous" banner for every conspiritard fruitcake and right-wing lunatic on the internet. None who have even come close to understanding the meaning of the story.

It's like the fascist morons who try to use the book "Nineteen Eighty-Four" (which they always call "1984" and that really pisses me off) as an argument when they've clearly never read it or know the first thing about the author.

When I was in high school, in the late 1960s, "Animal Farm" and "1984" were popular subjects of units in English class. The reason was that the books were viewed as "anticommunist" (to the point where the John Birch Society sold them); but few realized that George Orwell was a committed democratic socialist, who wrote the books as attacks on Stalinism, rather than socialism.

Same here except it was "Nineteen Eighty-Four" not "1984", and I think Huxley "Brave New World" got a look-in as well. All as visions of an alternative society plus as you say as an allegory of Soviet-style authoritarianism.

I have a copy of the first Canadian edition published in 1949. It's titled, in block letters;

"NINTEEN EIGHTY-FOUR"

Capitalized on both the original dust jacket and the title page. This is the dust jacket of the original British edition. Unlike mine it's in cursive and lower case;

And of course the CIA funded the film adaptation of Animal Farm, adulterating it with a clumsy last minute happy-ending.

Pottapaug's experience generally matches mine from about twenty-five years later. The approach to Orwell in public schools in the US was then to present him as a staunch anti-commie. (It probably still is.) It was a shock and a delight for me to pick up a copy of Orwell's Complete Works about five or ten years ago and read some of his other works that were much more explicit about his political stance.

For our freshman high school class, we were assigned to compare and contrast three books on the reading list, with the proviso that they could not be Nineteen Eighty-Four, Brave New World, and We (by Zamyatin). You can guess the subject of all but two or three of the papers. (I swapped in A Canticle for Leibowitz for Brave New World and made it work.)

I've just gone to check on it, and OCLC, which runs the union catalog for an enormous number of libraries, lists it as 1984 : a novel. The Library of Congress lists the early editions as Nineteen eighty-four : a novel, however, and that's probably authoritative.

We have always listed it that way.

I can't see why there is a dispute. What can be more authoritative than the title page and dust jacket of the first edition?

This was supposed to be a "boots on the ground" eviction blocking action. Eviction supposed to be at 10:30. Now this seems too good to be true, can they really have turned up too late and missed the fun? Comments grabbed just before 12:00 today to put the timestamps in context ..
