Real Estate professionals caught in tax-evasion sweep

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) - Thirty-one real estate professionals are being charged with tax evasion after a New York State Department of Taxation and Finance investigation.

Authorities say the defendants range from independent contractors with a small to mid-size businesses, to agents with multimillion dollar listings with large New York City firms.

Together, they are accused of not reporting more than $13 million of income and evading $650,000 in state income tax.

Twenty-nine of those accused face felony tax evasion charges for failing to file returns for three or more years in a row and could face 1-1/3 to 4 years in state prison if convicted.

The other two are charged with misdemeanors and could be sentenced to up to a year in jail if convicted.
