Carthage doctor and office manager plead not guilty to income tax evasion

Carthage — A Carthage surgeon and his office manager entered innocent pleas on tax fraud charges Thursday in a Springfield courtroom, according to an article on the Carthage Press Web site today.
Surgeon Brian Keith Ellefsen,44, and office manager Mark Edward Ellefsen, 37, were indicted by a federal grand jury in April for a tax fraud conspiracy, charged with attempting to avoid paying federal income taxes on nearly $1.6 million earned by the medical practice.
A seven-count indictment was returned by a federal grand jury on April 12, the online story said.
The federal indictment alleges that the two conspired to divert about $1,567,100 from Southwest Missouri Bone and Joint to Brian Ellefsen, without paying any taxes on the diverted funds.
It also accused Brian Ellefsen of filing a false income tax return and Mark Ellefsen of aiding and assisting in the preparation of a false income tax return on behalf of Brian Ellefsen.
