I found this in my e-mail inbox. Looks like the scammers are pretending the be a Captain in the United States Marine Corps. The e-mail has all the same hallmarks of the Nigerian 4-1-9 scams.

My name is Captain Matthew Stamford of the US Marine corps stationed in Kabul, Afghanistan,
I found some money stashed in a couple of barrels while on patrol ($900,000.00) I need someone to help me move it to a safer place, please have it in mind that there is no danger involved. You may contact me on usmarine119@i12.com<mailto:usmarine119@i12.com> so that I can provide you with more details.

Wow. That's a pretty lame attempt at impersonating a Marine officer.
I've never heard a Marine use the term "US."

The "please have it in mind" language is a give away also.

Hey, you guys - how about the claim that there was 900K US dollars in barrels in the middle of some godforsaken desert? I mean, what happened - Warren Buffett's private jet was flying over and had to dump some weight to make it over the mountains?
It isn't exactly necessary to search for subtle clues.

Not only would this be a scam/fraud violation there are also elements of the Stolen Valor Act that may be entertained here as well.

Impersonating an officer of the United States military would also be a federal crime just about anywhere no matter what you were doing.

lol... I believe you would be fine in a strip club. Its only really a crime if you wear the full uniform with insignias or if you try to solicit money by the use of the uniform or name. Or of you try to get the benefits of the officer you are impersonating, such as trying to get on base or into an area you shouldnt be in. Especially after 9/11 not a really smart thing to do.
