Michael J. Spear, jury supervisor, said this is the first time a potential juror was incarcerated for failing to respond to a court order to provide an explanation for not showing up for jury duty.

Spear said potential jurors who do not show up for duty must appear for a court hearing to provide an explanation. If the explanation is not satisfactory, they usually are fined or given community service, he said.

Maximum penalty is 15 days in jail and a $100 fine. She will probably spend more time than that in jail just waiting for her next hearing.
