Re: Non-Resident Sovereign thrown in jail for Contempt
Maximum penalty is 15 days in jail and a $100 fine. She will probably spend more time than that in jail just waiting for her next hearing.Michael J. Spear, jury supervisor, said this is the first time a potential juror was incarcerated for failing to respond to a court order to provide an explanation for not showing up for jury duty.
[snip]
Spear said potential jurors who do not show up for duty must appear for a court hearing to provide an explanation. If the explanation is not satisfactory, they usually are fined or given community service, he said.

If she's a sov'run, how did her name get into the jury pool?Taxpayingcitizen84 wrote:http://readingeagle.com/article.aspx?id=90117

The City of Reading, PA is in Berks County.
I thought sov'runs didn't have drivers licenses or state-issued ID cards. Guess she wasn't really a sov'run after all.Berks County Jury Duty FAQs
Q. How did I get picked for jury service?
A: The Jury Division receives a list every year in October from Penn DOT of all licensed drivers over 18 years of age and those with Identification cards. The required number of jurors for a particular day are randomly selected by computer and summoned to appear for jury duty.
Oh wait, Pennsylvania recently changed the rules to expand jury pools:
Hmmmm... to be a potential juror you have to vote, pay taxes, drive a car (presumptively with a license), or receive welfare or food stamps. Un-sov'run activity? Check, check, check, check.Jury duty FAQs from neighboring Bucks County, PA
Where does the Jury Selection Commission obtain the name of prospective jurors?
Beginning 2010 instead of using Penn DOT and voter’s registration records we will be using a list created by the state. The statewide jury list will include the names of residents who vote, pay taxes, drive a car, receive welfare or food stamps. The statewide list was created to identify more potential jurors into the jury pool.
Yep. Our heroine fails the sov'run qualification test across the board.
