This "dead" man trick isn't new. I've been digging around for it but can't find an online news reports, but one council took a slumlord to court.

This was a criminal matter rather than civil (I think it was gas safety issues). He failed to appear several times, at which point I think a warrant was issued for his arrest. He wrote to the court (in the third person) that he had died and been buried in Pakistan. He was, of course, found and dealt with.

The pretending he was dead bit is 100% accurate, but the individual details may be hazy given it was about 8 years ago. This is what happens when you clear out your old email folders. Damn! I knew I should have kept some emails, especially the Humour folder.

I've had a good dig around and none of the names (or the linked news items) suggested so far rings a bell. If I remember rightly the "this will make you laugh" email was sent to me by someone who worked for Reading Borough Council.
